Prepare For Your Tampa Divorce

The emotional weight of getting a divorce is significant, even for couples who agree that dissolving the marriage is the best course of action. Making sure you’re ready for your upcoming divorce proceedings can give you the best foundation for a successful outcome. Here’s what you can do to prepare in advance of your in-person or virtual Tampa divorce hearing.

Dress Appropriately

Make sure you’re dressed well, whether your court appearance is scheduled in-person or in a virtual courtroom. Avoid wearing casual clothing like jeans and t-shirts, and skip heavy makeup and/or jewelry. If attending court in person, avoid heavy perfumes. The judge will be paying attention to how you present yourself, which may impact their final decision.

Show Up Early

Ideally, you should arrive early to court. On-time is acceptable, however, if you are late, you could run the risk of losing your case or having the judge rule in your spouse’s favor. This is true whether your case is being held in a virtual court or at a brick-and-mortar Florida courthouse.

Bring the Right Documentation

It’s important that you prepare the documents you need to bring to your divorce hearing in advance of when you will need them. What paperwork you choose to bring is largely dictated by the matter you are going to court for.

For example, if you are petitioning for the removal of your ex’s visitation rights, you will need to bring a substantial proof of why this is in the best interests of your child. Copies of police reports after domestic violence incidents or witness statements printed and signed can be powerful and valuable when they are produced on the spot in court.

Pay Attention to Your Body Language

Your body language often tells the story that your words don’t, and family law judges are trained to pay attention. If you seem upset, frustrated, or just unfriendly and unwilling to talk, this won’t bode well for your case. Be warm and open, using friendly gestures and body language to convey approachability.
